Day 12 of the Turin Olympics
Tuesday, Feb. 21
STARS
Italian speedskater Enrico Fabris upstaged Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick — briefly, anyway — by winning the 1,500 meters. Davis was second and Hedrick third.
Sandra Kiriasis and Anja Schneiderheinze of Germany won the women's bobsled. Shauna Rohbock and Valerie Fleming took the silver to end an 0-for-Olympics stay for the U.S. sliding teams.
Felix Gottwald earned his second gold of these games, winning the Nordic combined sprint. It was Austria's record eighth gold medal in Turin — a bright spot for the country amid an ongoing doping scandal.
SHOWDOWN
Sasha Cohen is halfway to another American gold in women's figure skating. She's in first place after the short program, but only .03 points ahead of Russian Irina Slutskaya.
JUST SHORT AGAIN
Unbeatable four years ago, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen is still without a gold medal in Turin. Despite a brilliant finish by Bjoerndalen, Norway finished fifth in the biathlon relay. Germany took the gold.
READY OR NOT ...
Canadians and Russians have fought for hockey supremacy for over a half-century. They meet again in Wednesday's quarterfinals. The United States takes on Finland.
TURIN TALK
"Shakes my hand when I lose. Typical Chad." — Davis while storming out of a news conference after the 1,500. He and Hedrick continued their war of words: Hedrick is upset Davis wouldn't take part in the team pursuit last week, and Davis was mad Hedrick didn't shake his hand after Davis' victory Saturday in the 1,000. Hedrick did shake Davis' hand after the 1,500 — when Davis won a silver while Hedrick won the bronze.
