Police charge Md. man with trespassing, assault
A man escalated his troubles during an incident Tuesday night by allegedly arguing with and resisting police.
Butler Township Police on Wednesday charged Jason C. Coffman, 39, of Sparks Glencoe, Md., with felony aggravated assault, felony trespassing and misdemeanor resisting arrest as well as citations for public drunkenness and littering.
Following his arraignment by District Judge William O'Donnell, Coffman was placed in Butler County Prison on $25,000 bond.
According to charging documents, officers responded around 8:10 p.m. Tuesday to the Hampton Inn at 610 Butler Crossing in Butler Township for a report of trespassing. Upon arrival, police talked with an employee who said Coffman was asked to leave earlier that day, but had returned.
Police said they located Coffman sitting nearby between some trees and a dumpster.
“Coffman was immediately confrontational when I approached him,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.
Police said Coffman appeared to be drunk, and the initial officer called for assistance.
“He kept repeating that he is a paying customer and that he had paid for breakfast, and that I had no right to come talk to him,” police said.
According to police, after backup arrived they told Coffman he was under arrest. Police said Coffman shifted his stance as if he were about to run.
“Coffman began stepping away from us into the bushes,” police said. “As Coffman turned to run, (another officer) and I took him to the ground.”
Police said Coffman continued to resist as handcuffs were placed on his wrists, and during that time, one of the officers suffered an injury described as a “raised laceration” on his forehead.
A preliminary hearing for Coffman has been scheduled for Aug. 5 before District Judge Kevin O'Donnell.
