Ferree on fire in Late Models
BUFFALO TWP — Can anybody stop Alex Ferree?
The driver of the No. 4 Late Model car is threatening to run away with that division this season at Lernerville Speedway.
The Saxonburg resident won his fourth feature in five tries at the Sarver track Friday night, starting from the 12th spot and passing seven cars while running the high groove on laps 13 and 14.
He passed race leader Dave Hess Jr. on the second turn of lap 18 and cruised to victory, despite consecutive side-by-side restarts on the final two laps.
“I haven’t changed a thing with this car from week to week, everything’s been working so well,” Ferree said. “This thing is a dream.”
Ferree finished second on the only Fab Four race night he failed to win this spring.
“I had a good car. I had plenty of power,” Hess said. “Alex is just so much better right now.
“He’s got the race machine that everybody wants — a driveable car with a lot of traction. Inside, outside, he’s gripping the track everywhere.”
Hess said he plans to continue racing at Lernerville on a regular basis.
And he plans to compete with Ferree.
“We’ll figure it out and we’ll start racing with him,” Hess said. “We have to. There is no choice. When someone in your division gets off to a start like this, everyone else has to work that much harder to catch up.”
Ferree will go for three consecutive feature wins here next week.
“I don’t know ... the way the car’s going, it’s a possibility,” Ferree said of a third straight win. “But I wouldn’t say it’s a probability.”
In other feature action Friday:
n Brian Swartzlander of Leechburg won his 50th career Modified feature at Lernerville, holding off veterans Jim Weller Jr. and Kevin Bolland to take the checkered flag.
Swartzlander became only the seventh driver in the track’s 40-year history to win at least 50 features in one division, joining Bob Wearing Sr., Ed Lynch Jr., Lynn Geisler, Lou Blaney, Blackie Watt and Johnny Beaber.
“We were good on the bottom and didn’t want to move off it,” Swartzlander said. “I’d go up high, get a little sideways and lose a little ground. I couldn’t keep taking that chance.”
Swartzlander started the race from the seventh position.
n Lynch. had to pass race leader Scott Bonnell twice to win the Sprint feature.
Lynch started from the 12th spot and moved from fifth to second during the 15th and 16th laps. He passed Bonnell on Turn 2 of the 18th lap, but Mike Shearer’s No. 25 car spun out on Turn 3, forcing an 18th-lap restart and giving the lead back to Bonnell.
Lynch passed him on Turn 3 of the 23rd lap and kept the lead during a 24th-lap restart to post his third win at Lernerville this season and his 85th Sprint feature win here overall.
Friday marked the second week of all Sprint cars driving on Hoosier tires at Lernerville. The World of Outlaws Sprint cars visit Tuesday for the Commonwealth Clash.
“We were working the whole track, trying to search it out,” Lynch said. “Everybody’s talking to each other in the pits, trying to figure out how to keep up with those guys.”
n Joe Kelley of Mount Pleasant took the lead from pole-sitter Butch Lambert of Mars on the fifth lap and held him off the rest of the way for his second Pure Stock win of the season.
Kelley posted his 24th career Pure Stock feature triumph at Lernerville, pulling within three of Bruce Milbert for third all-time in that division.
Lambert and Kelley have combined to win every Pure Stock points title at Lernerville since 1998.
Notes: There were 91 cars in the pits. ... Mike Turner of Butler won a Modified heat race Friday for his first checkered flag in any division at Lernerville. A former Pure Stock driver in his third year in the No. 98 Modified, Turner won a heat race at Mercer three years ago. ... Lynch has three feature wins and four heat race victories here entering Tuesday’s Outlaws event. ... Lindsay Enscore, 22, of North Washington, made her Sprint car racing debut Friday night and flipped her No. 96 on the second turn of the second lap of her heat race. She was unhurt. ... Dane Laraway of Irwin endured a violent flip in his No. 1 Late Model early in the feature, but was uninjured as well.
