8 is enough

Ferree, Priester end connections to number

BUFFALO TWP— Alex Ferree and Scott Priester played their own versions of Crazy Eights at Lernerville Speedway.

Ferree had been waiting eight weeks for a feature win at the Sarver track. Priester had been waiting eight years.

Both waits ended Friday night.

Ferree, of Saxonburg, survived 13 restarts and a pair of hard-charging cars to record his seventh Lernerville Late Model feature triumph of the season, but his first since May 25.

The driver of the No. 4 took the lead from pole-sitter Ken Schaltenbrand on the seventh lap and never lost it. But Jared Miley and Matt Lux were closing on him after starting well back in the field.

"I was getting a little nervous there at the end,"Ferree admitted. "Jared and Matt were really good and those cautions kept coming. I kept thinking ... 'This is not what I need.'"

Ferree started from the third position. Miley started 14th and finished second. He moved into the No. 2 position by the midway point of the race.

Lux started 21st and passed Schaltenbrand for third on the final lap.

"Our car was pretty good tonight,"Miley said. "Once I got up through the field, I didn't want any more restarts. I needed five or six smooth laps in a row and it didn't happen.

"We weren't good between (turns) one and two on the restarts and that hurt us."

Lux surprised himself and his race team with his performance. He hit the wall during his heat race and damaged the car. Then the No. 21 car got banged around during the Late Model B-Main, where the Franklin driver finished third.

"All we did was piece the car together to get it out there for the feature and collect a few points,"Lux said. "I can't believe we got third. I'd have been thrilled to finish in the top 10.

"I told my guys before the race we needed 10 cautions to have a shot at getting up there. And we got them."

Priester didn't need any cautions to win the Sprint feature — and didn't get any. After two restarts on lap 2, the race never stopped again until the Rimersburg driver of the No. 11Xtook the checkered flag.

Priester grabbed the lead from Doug Dodson on that second-lap restart and pulled away from everybody after starting fourth. Ed Lynch Jr. started eighth and was second by the fifth lap, but never got close to Priester.

"I've played a race like this out in my mind many times, but it never came to fruition until now,"Priester said. "Sometimes you just have a night where everything feels right. Tonight, this car was perfect. I felt so comfortable out there."

Fab Four racing was rained out last week. The week before that, engine trouble prevented Priester from getting his car on the track for the feature.

"That wound up helping, actually, because we got into the engine and tweaked it a bit,"Priester said. "I could feel this night coming."

In other features Friday night:

n Jeremiah Shingledecker claimed his third Modified win of the season, snatching the lead back from Del Rougeux Jr. on the final lap after surrendering it on a 20th-lap restart.

Rougeux finished second and Slippery Rock's Dave Murdick took third. Murdick finished fifth in the Late Model feature, driving Jimmie Pitkavish's No. 1 car. The Modified and Late Model features ran back-to-back.

"I could have used a drink of water there (between races), but never had a chance to get one,"Murdick said.

Friday marked Murdick's third-ever start in a Late Model.

"I'm still getting used to that thing,"he said. "But I'll take a fifth-place. My record is three races in a night. I ran a Sprint, Modified and Limited Modified at Mercer one night in 1996."

• Butch Lambert of Mars won his third Pure Stock feature of the Lernerville campaign, starting up front with series points leader Mike Pegher Jr. and racing side-by-side with him for most of the 15 laps.

Lambert took the lead by a nose on the 11th lap, just before a yellow caution came out.

"You can't ask for a better race than that,"Lambert said. "Mike's a good guy. We've raced at other tracks together. I want to see him win the (points) championship this year."

Notes:There were 99 cars in the pits. ... Ferree won his seventh heat race of the season to go with his seventh feature win. ... Three drivers — Dan Shetler in the Sprints, J.R.McGinley in the Modifieds and Wayne Carbo in the Pure Stocks — won their first heat races of 2007. ... Renfrew's Bob Wearing Jr. made his first Lernerville appearance of the year and finished eighth in the Late Model feature.
