Hoffman wins state golf title
VERONA— Adam Hofmann shot 1-under-par over the final three holes Wednesday to win the 94th Pennsylvania Amateur Golf Championship at Longue Vue Country Club.
The Fox Chapel Golf Club member carded a 2-under 208 for the 54-hole tournament. He will be a freshman at Vanderbilt University this fall.
Hofmann began the day even at 4-under with Nathan Smith of Pinecrest Country Club. Smith took a one-stroke lead when he birdied the par-5 No. 15 hole.
Hofmann answered that birdie on the par-4 No. 17. He used a 9-iron on his second shot from 142 yards out and the ball landed 15 feet from the hole. A successful putt knotted the score.
Smith's drive on the 471-yard par-4 No. 18 sailed right into the tree line. He punched out and put his third shot within 35 feet of the hole. His par attempt came up four feet short.
Hofmann's second shot on No. 18 ultimately won him the championship. His tee shot trickled into the left rough, 162 yards from the hole. He followed that with a 7-iron that landed the ball in the center of the green, 25 yards from the hole.
A two-putt gave the 18-year-old Fox Chapel High School graduate his first state championship.
Hofmann trailed Smith by two strokes after taking a quadruple bogey 8 on the par-4 No. 6 hole, but never fell behind any further.
Smith, 28, of North Hills, bogeyed Nos. 8, 11 and 12 while failing to widen his lead. He finished one stroke back.
St. Jude Golf Club member Sean Knapp tied for 15th overall with a 216. Mike Van Sickle of Treesdale Golf and Country Club carded a 217, Grove City's Cameron Peterson had a 219 and St. Jude Golf Club member Rob Voltz had a 226.
