Lynch gets No. 6 at Lernerville
BUFFALO TWP — Mike Lutz knew Ed Lynch was somewhere close behind in Friday's Sprint feature at Lernerville Speedway.
Lynch, on the other hand, could see Lutz and was watching him for several laps before making his move.
Lynch pulled past Lutz on the 17th lap and went on to capture his sixth Sprint car feature victory this season at the track.
Lynch was able to hold off Kevin Schaeffer, who finished second just ahead of Lutz. Lynch held a four-point advantage in the points standings (370-366) entering Friday's event.
Lutz said he had trouble in the second turn and Lynch patiently waited to strike.
"That's really what I had to do," said Lynch, of Apollo. "I had to do something when he was high there. When he was high, I went in the middle.
"He pulled away for awhile and then I'd pull back,"Lynch added.
Lutz had taken the lead after one lap from Scott Bonnell and maintained it until Lynch moved up from fifth after the first lap, then moved up to third place on the fourth lap.
After Lynch took over the lead, Schaeffer stayed strong and passed Lutz with three laps to go.
"On turns 1 and 2, there was not a lot of top left," said Lutz, of Mercer. "We ran a used left tire and felt it quit driving. You try and maintain the lead and hold on, but it's tough with Lynch behind you."
Lutz was pleased with the third-place finish, especially after last week's fifth-place showing.
Actually, the last three or four races since the Outlaws, we've been dialed in," said Lutz. "The car has been running exceptionally well. We'll definitely take a third-place finish."
n In the Late Models feature, Matt Lux took the momentum of winning a heat race and led all 25 laps in picking up his second win of the season and third overall at Lernerville.
His last win at Lernerville came on June 22, which was also the last time Lynch won a Sprint race at the Sarver oval.
Lux maintained a slight lead over runner-up Jared Miley, who has had the unfortunate luck of placing second for three consecutive weeks.
"We've been struggling down here and everywhere we've been," said Lux. "I liked the bottom better, but as long as we had momentum on top, we were fine."
n The Pure Stocks feature got off to an inauspicious start as there were five cautions before one lap had yet to be contested, then a sixth yellow flag came after one lap.
Bob Egley of Kittanning took the lead on lap 3 and held on to the top spot through two more cautions before Pittsburgh resident Bob Lipinski took the lead before the 13th lap and rode on to victory.
"It was a rough one, with very little track to work with," said Lipinski. "It was a wild ride."
Like Lux, it was Lipinski's second win of the season and third in his career at Lernerville. He held back a late charge of Egley and Jason Fosnaught of Creighton.
• With eight cautions in the 15-lap Pure Stocks, the Modifieds went off without a hitch, breezing through 25 caution-free laps thanks to just 13 cars starting the race.
Jeremiah Shingledecker of Stoneboro trailed J.R. McGinley of Fairmount City after the first lap, but took the lead on lap 2 and cruised to the victory.
Kevin Bolland of New Brighton moved up to second place after the 13th lap, but couldn't mount much of a charge as Shingledecker opened up close to a quarter-lap lead the rest of the way.
Notes:The win was Shingledecker's fourth of the season at Lernerville ... There were 90 cars in the pits, including 30 in the Pure Stocks ... Fab Four Racing is scheduled for Friday.
