Butler Y swimmer captures crown

Forbes wins state title in 50 butterfly

The Butler Family YMCA Barracudas began training in September for swimming competitions.

That competition ended March 22 at the state championships at Penn State University with Camryn Forbes winning a state title.

Forbes, 10, a fourth-grader at Penn Christian Academy, won the girls 10-under 50-yard butterfly in a team record time of 30.02 seconds. That broke her own previous team record of 30.34, which was set during the district championships.

The previous record had stood since 1982.

“Camryn is an outstanding swimmer,” said Amy Brennan, Butler Y aquatics director. “But we have plenty of outstanding swimmers.”

The Barracudas had 117 swimmers ages 6 to 17 on this year’s roster. Including Forbes, 14 of them placed among the top 10 in respective events at the state meet.

“This was an Olympic year, which always helps our swimming numbers,” Brennan said.

Besides winning in the 50-yard butterfly, Forbes placed sixth in the 50-yard backstroke and swam the anchor leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay, which placed eighth.

Forbes began swimming at age 6 at the Butler Country Club. She plays tennis there as well and competes for two summer swim teams, Penn Valley and BCC.

Also having a stellar state meet for the Barracudas was Nathan Walls in the boys age 11-12 division. He finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.87, fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and swam a leg of the 200-yard medley relay, which finished sixth.

Paul Broskey, Alex Fertelmes and Corrie Jones coached the team.

“YMCA swimming is not just for success in the team, but success in the person,” Broskey said. “We teach our kids to be better people through athletics, not just good athletes.”
