BlueSox falter, but still topple Sliders

SLIPPERY ROCK — The BlueSox discovered Sunday that it's better late than never.

Butler gave up a lead late in its Prospect League game against Slippery Rock before finding redemption with a run in the top of the 10th inning in a 4-3 victory at Jack Critchfield Park.

With two outs, Butler third baseman Brett Zuriene lofted a ball into left field as Jacke Healey scored what proved to be the game-winning run.

Anthony Munoz, who came on in relief with two outs in the eighth inning, pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th to tally the win for Butler (2-1).

The game's result ties the three-game series at one game apiece after the Slilders grabbed a 2-1 win Saturday. The teams meet at 6:35 p.m. today at Pullman Park.

"Slippery Rock is a good team," said BlueSox manager Jason Wuerfel. "They're pretty solid in the field, they can pitch and definitely hit. Anytime you can come out and get a win against a good team, it feels good."

Zuriene's game-winning RBI came off Slippery Rock reliever J.T. Thomas, a right-hander with a sidearm delivery.

"He was trying to get me with that slider," Zuriene said. "But he left it up a bit and I was able to drop it in for a hit."

Healey had reached base by leading off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on Aaron Ordy's sacrifice bunt.

With two outs, Sean Gusrang was intentionally walked in front of Zuriene.

"Using wooden bats, most of the games this season are going to be really close," Zuriene said. "It's huge to win one-run games like this."

Butler held a 3-1 lead before giving up a run in the bottom of the sixth and another in the eighth.

The first of those was charged to Butler starter Chuck Nicholas when Charlie Kelly scored on Jacob Petkac's double to cut the BlueSox edge to 3-2.

Nicholas did rebound to get Marcus Breeden to ground out to end the inning, stranding Petkac at third base.

The Sliders (2-1) tied the game with Breeden's run-scoring double in the eighth off Butler reliever Trent DeLazzer. But Munoz was brought in to get the final out of the inning and he forced Derek Carr to line out with the bases loaded.

Slippery Rock stranded 13 baserunners, including 10 in the final five innings.

"You're going to get in slumps during the season," said Sliders manager Chase Rowe, "but I expect us to continue to get better offensively."

Rich Raraigh started for Slippery Rock and pitched seven innings, giving up three runs (one earned), striking out one and walking three.

Nicholas worked six innings for Butler, surrendering two runs on six hits, striking out four and walking three.

Saturday Slippery Rock 2, Butler 1

Three Slippery Rock pitchers combined to shut down Butler on five hits.

Seneca Valley graduate Cory Mazzoni started and went six innings before being relieved by Butler High product Josh Marchinoski in the seventh.

The final thorn in Butler's side was Mike Devine, who pitched two scoreless innings to cap the win.

Mazzoni won the game after striking out six and walking two.

Andrew DiNardo started and pitched well for Butler, giving up a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five and walking one in six innings of work.
