Sliders take a beating
Seneca Valley High graduate Cory Mazzoni had a rough inning on the mound for the Slippery Rock Sliders Wednesday night, giving up eight runs — five earned — in the fourth inning in a 14-1 loss to Richmond (Ind.) at Jack Critchfield Park.
Mazzoni cruised through the first three innings, throwing 40 pitches and giving up three hits.
But Richmond (3-3) put up eight runs in the fourth inning on nine hits, three walks and one costly error.
The River Rats added six more runs off reliever Brad Duffy in the fifth inning.
The Sliders (4-2) have an off day Thursday.
"Perfect timing," said Slippery Rock manager Chase Rowe. "We're going to keep them out of the ballpark, let them forget about it and move on to the next game."
There were two bright spots on an otherwise bleak night for the Sliders: Jacob Petkac hit the first home run of the season for Slippery Rock in the bottom of the fourth inning and pitcher Andrew Young retired 11 straight in 3 2/3 innings of perfect relief.
Young, who pitched at Mansfield (Pa.) University this spring, joined the team Tuesday.
"He did a very nice job," Rowe said. "He is a potential starter down the road. We just wanted to get him some work because he just got here two days ago."
North Coast (Ohio) 3, Butler 0 — The BlueSox managed only five singles in this road loss.Brian Billigen had two of the hits for Butler (2-3), raising his team-leading average to .429.John Navage picked up the loss, striking out one, walking two and giving up one run in four innings.
