E. Butler Legion making history

ERIE — East Butler's American Legion baseball team has reached uncharted territory.

Nick Rossmiller and Evan Oswald combined to scatter nine hits and strike out seven Monday, helping East Butler stay alive in the double-elimination Region 8 Tournament with an 8-1 victory over Bradford.

"We believe this is the first time East Butler has ever won two games in a regional," East Butler manager Carl Hays said. "The team is pretty happy about that achievement."

Rossmiller pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, bouncing back from a rough outing Saturday. Oswald pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and contributed a double and a single.

Ryan Fennell had two doubles and Greg Hays had one for East Butler (23-3), which plays at 4 p.m. today against either Millcreek or Venango.

Manager Hays said pitcher Greg Hays likely will start and "I think Rossmiller can go a few innings."

East Butler is continuing to play the tournament with only 12 players, using primarily three pitchers.

Bradford (24-4) committed seven errors in Monday's game and stranded seven runners in scoring position.

Losing pitcher Cory Viola had a double and a run-scoring single to lead the team offensively.
