'Jury' still out on outcome

BlueSox must wait 8 days to see if homer holds up

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Butler BlueSox will have to wait eight days to see if Adam Jury's solo home run was a game-winner.

The infielder sent a Cody Dearth pitch over the left-field fence in the top of the 10th inning Friday night at Critchfield Park, giving the BlueSox a 5-4 lead.

But before the Sliders picked up the bats in the bottom of the inning, the game was suspended due to lightning close to the park.

The game will resume at 6:05 p.m. July 31 at the same venue. Following the game's conclusion, the teams will play a regularly scheduled contest that evening.

Jury's home run, his first of the season, came with one out.

"He's been hot and cold this season," Butler manager Jason Wuerfel said of Jury. "Most of these kids go right from playing for their college team into the summer league. For a lot of these guys, they've now played about 90 games.

"Adam may have been fatigued there for awhile, but he's been heating up."

The Sliders believed they had won the game in the previous inning.

With the score knotted at four, Sean Mahley walked to begin the bottom of the ninth, then stole second and third.

With one out, Jeremy Banks grounded to Jury at shortstop.

Mahley broke for the plate while Jury, who was playing in, fielded the ball and fired to catcher Ryan Geibel.

The throw came in plenty of time, but when Mahley collided with Geibel, the ball hit the ground and the home plate umpire signaled safe.

After conferring with the field umpire, it was ruled that Mahley did not attempt a slide and was called out.

"The home plate umpire did not rule that he (Mahley) lowered his shoulder, but the field umpire did," said Slippery Rock manager Andy Chalot. "I thought he was trying to slide, but it's a judgment call."

The ruling left Banks at first base with two outs and the next batter, Matt Baer, flied out to end the inning.

Slippery Rock has stolen 11 bases so far in the game, five of them by Mahley.

Eric Miranda added three thefts.

"We've got three or four guys who run really well," said Chalot. "They did a good job of getting on base tonight. Even if they don't get a good jump, they can make up for it because they're so fast."

Thanks to a 3-run fourth inning, Butler took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth frame.

But the Sliders received an RBI-single from Matt Fenster and Derek Carr scored on a double play to tie the game. The runs were charged to reliever Jim Connelly.

Ben Ballantine started for Butler and went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits, striking out six and walking a pair.

"He pitched well," said Wuerfel of Ballantine. "After five innings, he was around 95 pitches. His last couple of starts, he threw over 100 pitches, so I wasn't going to send him back out there."

Corey Young was on the mound for the eighth and ninth innings for the BlueSox.

Dearth relieved Sliders' starter Joe Garrity in the eighth frame.

Butler's Zach Duggan has four hits in the game, including a double.
