Bears remain in playoff hunt
KARNS CITY — Despite coming off a 37-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pride, the Butler County Bears remain alive for a United States Football Alliance playoff berth.
The Bears (3-4-2) host the Cleveland Saints (4-5) at 7 p.m. Saturday in their regular season finale at Karns City High School's stadium.
A Bears' win coupled with a Pittsburgh Cobras' loss would give Butler County second place in the USFA's Keystone Division and a trip to the playoffs.
The Bears have been outscored 189-69 this season.
"I know it sounds strange that we're still alive, but the teams we needed to have lose last week lost," Bears coach Kirk Bergbigler said.
The Pride (9-0) have surrendered only 52 points all season and play the Cobras (4-4-1) on Saturday.
"We couldn't move the ball against them at all," Bergbigler admitted. "We hit a pass play for 40 yards, but it wasn't until the fourth quarter.
"Their offensive line has been together for five years. They play well together and there wasn't much we could do against them."
Butler County trailed 23-0 at halftime. Brian Perry intercepted a pass in the end zone that prevented another Pride score in the second half.
Karns City graduate Stephon Conto had moved to quarterback for the Bears recently, but will go back to a receiver/running back role this week. Bill McCaslin will start at quarterback.
