U.S. Marshals arrest fugitive
A drug felon who allegedly failed to report to the Butler County Prison six weeks ago is behind bars — this time without bond.
The U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force captured 29-year-old Eric L. Barlow Jr. Wednesday at a home in McKeesport, Allegheny County.
Barlow, of McKeesport, was arrested without incident, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Sean Kiley.
Authorities said they used “known associates” of the fugitive to track him down to the home. He was alone inside.
“He eventually came out,” Kiley said, “after answering the door.”
McKeesport police assisted at the scene. County narcotics officers were also later called in apparently after a search of the house.
The Allegheny County District Attorney Narcotics Enforcement Team is “working another investigation from this,” Kiley said. He declined to elaborate.
Calls to the district attorney's and sheriff's offices and McKeesport police were not immediately returned.
U.S. Marshals nabbed Barlow on a felony escape charge in an arrest warrant issued Sept. 11 by District Judge William Fullerton in Butler after he allegedly did not show up at the Butler County Prison.
Barlow was supposed to report to the prison Aug. 22 in accordance with a sentencing order by Butler County Judge Tim McCune.
That Aug. 15 order sentenced the defendant to two to six years in state prison for felony drug possession stemming from a controlled drug buy May 25, 2017, when state police said he sold cocaine and fentanyl to a confidential informant.
Police arrested Barlow in the case Aug. 29, 2018. He was released the following day after posting $50,000 bond.
On July 9, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
At sentencing, McCune deferred Barlow's prison commitment. The order did not give a reason for the deferment, court records showed.
Afterward, according to detectives, sheriff's deputies took him to the county prison, where he was processed and released. He was to report back Aug. 22 — but never did.
On Sept. 11, he was charged with escape. Fullerton arraigned him Wednesday on that charge. He was denied bail.
“No combination of conditions will assure his appearance and protection of the community,” court records noted as the reason for the no-bail decision.
Online records listed William Difenderfer of Pittsburgh as Barlow's attorney in the drug case. He did not immediately return a telephone call.
