Defending champion Ducks on late-season roll
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Jean-Sebastien Giguere was proud — but humble — after posting his third consecutive 30-win season.
"That's always a benchmark for a goalie," he said after making 24 saves in the Anaheim Ducks' 3-1 victory over Ottawa on Monday night. "But you certainly don't do it all by yourself."
The win was the sixth straight for the defending Stanley Cup champions. Giguere (30-16-5) and his teammates seem to be peaking at a good time.
"He made some huge saves again tonight," Scott Niedermayer said.
Corey Perry and Niedermayer each had a goal and an assist as the Ducks downed the Senators in a rematch of last season's Stanley Cup finals.
The Ducks got a bit of help from their former coach and general manager, Bryan Murray, back in the rink in the same capacity for Ottawa.
Murray, who fired John Paddock on Feb. 27 and returned to the bench, drew a bench minor for jawing at officials at 9:12 of the third period, giving the Ducks a 5-on-3 power play. Scott Niedermayer scored to give Anaheim a two-goal pad.
Shortly later, Murray yelled some more, drew a game misconduct and was ejected.
"I talked to the referees during the game and I took a bad penalty," he said. "I apologized to them (his players). I put them in a bad spot. It was a 2-1 game and we had a chance to win.
"I took a second penalty and cost them the game. I should never do that and it won't happen again."
The two Cup finalists recently have been heading in different directions. While the Ducks are on a roll, the Senators have won just nine of their last 24. They are 1-2 under Murray.
Capitals 10, Bruins 2
At Washington, Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick in a six-goal first period and finished with five points and Washington snapped Boston's six-game winning streak.
Ovechkin's three goals give him a league-leading 52 and made him the first to 50 in the NHL this season.
Sharks 6, Canadiens 4
At San Jose, Joe Thornton had two goals and two assists, and new Sharks defenseman Brian Campbell scored the final goal in San Jose's sixth straight victory.
