Leafs float past Flyers

PHILADELPHIA — Pavel Kubina scored two game-winners in two games for four crucial points and has Toronto believing it can catch Philadelphia for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We haven't stopped thinking about the playoffs," Toronto forward Alex Steen said.

For the second night in a row, Kubina scored the winning goal to beat Philadelphia. On Wednesday night, he gave the Maple Leafs a 3-2 over the Flyers.

"We just have to get him out there more," Leafs coach Paul Maurice said. "It's a confidence issue and he's feeling good with that puck right now. He's getting it hard off his stick and he's played well."

Kubina scored in overtime on Tuesday when the Leafs rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat the Flyers 4-3. This time, Kubina did it early in the third period.

Playing without Mats Sundin for the last two periods, the Maple Leafs moved within five points of the Flyers for the last playoff spot in the East.

Sundin left in the first period with a strained groin muscle. Sundin, who leads the team with 77 points, had at least one in nine straight games and helped lead the Maple Leafs on their current 9-3-1 run.

Sundin is day to day and should be able to play Saturday against Buffalo.

Capitals 3, Flames 2

At Washington, Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 55th and 56th goals, including the tiebreaker with 1:54 left, and Olie Kolzig earned his 300th win in the Capitals' victory over Calgary.

Kolzig is the 23rd goalie to win 300 NHL games, earning every victory with Washington.

Jarome Iginla and Kristian Huselius took advantage of a pair of 5-on-3 power plays for Calgary.

Panthers 4, Islanders 2

At Sunrise, Fla., defenseman Karlis Skrastins broke a tie 8:22 into the third period.

The Panthers won their season-high fifth straight and took all four meetings between the teams, completing their first season sweep of the Islanders since their first season in 1993-94.

Kamil Kreps and Stephen Weiss also scored for the Panthers, who moved within five points of eighth-place Philadelphia. Brett McLean added an empty-net goal.

Hurricanes 3, Blackhawks 0

At Chicago, Cam Ward made 25 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, and Eric Staal had a goal and two assists.

Erik Cole and Matt Cullen also scored for Carolina, which won its fifth straight and eighth in nine to strengthen its hold on first place in the Southeast Division.

The Hurricanes scored all three goals during a 3:48 span midway through the first period. Ward posted his sixth NHL shutout.

Ducks 4, Canucks 1

At Anaheim, Calif., Travis Moen scored his first NHL short-handed goal, Doug Weight connected for a power-play tally, and the Ducks broke a club record with their eighth straight home victory.

Todd Marchant scored in his third straight game and the Ducks reached 40 wins for the fourth time in five seasons.

Vancouver's Roberto Luongo, making his 19th consecutive start and 35th in 37 games, was pulled 4:03 into the second period after allowing four goals on 19 shots.
