Aubrey Sr. enjoys Senior PGA experience
The weather was miserable and he was well out of contention.
John Aubrey Sr. didn't care. He was proud just to be on the golf course for the final two rounds of the Senior PGA last weekend at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
The owner and club pro of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred golf course in Butler made the cut Friday before tying for 57th Monday with a four-round total of 299, which was 15 strokes over par.
"These were the world's best 50-and-over golfers, and I made the cut," Aubrey said. "I feel honored by that."
His son, John Aubrey Jr., who redshirted as a freshman on the Penn State University golf team last season, served as Aubrey's caddy for the event.
There were 156 golfers in the tournament. The top 70 after Friday's round made the cut. Jim White had the best score among the club pros with a 3-over par 287, finishing 16th.
Aubrey will turn 54 Sunday. He qualified for this year's Senior PGA by finishing in the top six among 50 golfers at a sectional qualifier, then finishing among the top 30 (14th) at the National Club Pro Championships last fall in Florida.
He competed in the Senior PGA two years ago at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, and finished 65th.
"It's a thrill for someone like me to play in this tournament," Aubrey said. "Hale Irwin won it by shooting 8-under par. To do that under those weather conditions was phenomenal."
Aubrey said the Louisville area received nearly seven inches of rain over the weekend.
"It was horrible," he said. "We'd play three holes, the siren would go off and they'd bring us back in. We'd wait until it stopped, play another three holes, same thing.
"We were on and off that course all weekend. There was so much water out there that it was tough walking. Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer withdrew.
"I'm in shape, but these senior pros are in great shape. I enjoy walking a golf course; I'm just not used to it. We don't have many caddies back home and I'm not going to carry my own clubs," Aubrey added.
He said his son was an "honest" caddy.
"I don't see as well as I used to and I'd ask John to read a putt for me," Aubrey said. "If he couldn't read it, he'd say he didn't know. Then I'd try to figure it out for myself."
Aubrey's rounds were consistent: 75, 74, 73 and 77.
He had a sandwich with Nicklaus during the weekend. His locker was across from Tom Watson's and Fuzzy Zoeller's.
"Just a great experience," he said. "And talk about a tough golf course. You had to hit your putts directly in the middle if they were gonna go."
Aubrey plans to play in a few area tournaments this summer before competing in qualifiers again in August and September.
"I may play in a couple of tournaments in Ohio, but I don't travel much anymore," he said. "I'm not flying to California to chase the Seniors Tour. I know guys that do that, but that's not for me.
"My kids are home and I like spending time at home. There's other things in life besides golf."
