Wilson wins playoff at Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Mark Wilson made birdie on the third playoff hole Monday morning to beat Jose Coceres to win the Honda Classic, marking Wilson's first PGA Tour win in 111 starts.

Wilson rolled in an 8-footer on the par-3 17th. Coceres followed with a putt of nearly the same distance and on the same line as Wilson's, but his try hit the lip and rolled away.

Wilson, who earned $990,000, thrust both fists into the air and hugged his caddy. He's gone to the Tour's qualifying school in each of the last 10 years, but is now exempt through the 2009 season.

Almost an hour after missing the biggest putt of his career Sunday, Boo Weekley was smiling, signing autographs and cracking one-liners.

"The Lord has blessed me with another chance," Weekley said. "Why shouldn't I be happy?"

Not even missing out on what would have been his first PGA Tour victory and a $990,000 winner's check could spoil Weekley's mood on Sunday night — since he got another chance at claiming those items on Monday morning.

Weekley missed a 3-foot par putt on the 72nd hole that would have given him a win at the Honda Classic. Instead, he wound up in a four-man playoff with Camilo Villegas, Wilson and Coceres, one that was suspended after one hole because of darkness at PGA National.

Weekley, Villegas, Wilson and Coceres all finished at 5-under 275. Play resumed Monday at 8:30 a.m.

"I was shaking," Weekley said of the par putt on the final hole of regulation. "I ain't going to lie about it. I mean, I was shaking like a leaf. ... I made a good stroke. I just hit it way too hard."

With a 15-footer on the tournament's 71st hole, the par-3 17th, Weekley took the lead and only needed a par on 18.
