Valencia father and son to appear on cable hunting show
It was a trip of a lifetime, even if it took two years in the making.
Corey Sutter and his father Paul, of Valencia won a turkey-hunting trip, sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation, which they took in April of 2003.
Their exploits, however, will be on display on Turkey Call, a hunting series produced by the NWTF, this week on The Outdoor Channel.
The show featuring the Sutters will appear at 1:30 p.m. today, 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 7 p.m. Sunday.
"The tape just arrived last Thursday," said Paul, 50. "I don't know why it took so long, maybe it was the editing or the segment."
It was Corey, 17, a member of the Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship (JAKES), who won the "Hunt of A Lifetime" raffle, which he registered at an Allegheny Valley Chapter banquet.
"We signed him up … and found out he was one of 78,000 entries and they plucked his name," said Paul.
"I was told it was nationwide, I thought tons and tons of kids would be entered," said Corey. "They narrowed it down to five and I my name was eventually pulled."
The duo was flown to an adjacent ranch to the King Ranch in Kingsville, Texas.
"The trip wa sjust amazing," said Corey. "They had taken care of everything. They had us completely attired with name-brand stuff."
"The place we stayed was pretty exclusive. It was very nice," said Paul, who is a NWTF volunteer.
"They gave Corey a shotgun and gave us complete hunting outfits … and Corey got every piece of turkey hunting paraphernalia. We brought home a bushel of stuff.
"The hunt was professionally recorded and while we were there they said it would be on a TV show," Paul added.
During the hunt, Corey, now a senior at Mars High School, was allowed to shoot two turkeys and Paul was allowed one.
"They mounted one of Corey's birds and shipped it back," said Paul. "He got two nice birds. It was just an excellent trip."
It was Paul's father who helped him become involved in hunting and passed that onto Corey. Because of that, the Sutters attend banquets in order to help the cause.
"We just went to fund-raising banquets. It's always nice to win some guns," Paul said.
"This trip just put me in the black when it comes to raffle tickets."
