State hunters bag 35 elk

HARRISBURG — The state's fourth modern-day elk season ended Saturday with the 40 licensees killing 35 elk.

Ten were antlered and 25 were antlerless, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Last year, the same number of licensees took 12 antlered and 22 antlerless elk.

Kenneth Mountain, of St. Marys, took the largest bull elk at 818 pounds on Nov. 7. Carl Mozeleski, of Clarks Summit, took the largest antlerless elk at 519 pounds on Nov. 8.

The youngest hunter to kill an elk was Donnie A. Snyder, 12, of Brookville, who shot a 163-pound antlerless elk.

In 2003, the state licensed 100 hunters, resulting in 68 kills, including 18 antlered and 50 antlerless. In 2002, the state licensed 70 hunters, resulting in 61 kills, including 32 antlered and 29 antlerless elk. In 2001, 30 licensed hunters killed 27, including 14 antlered and 13 antlerless.

Before resuming elk hunts in 2001, the last legal elk hunt was held in 1931.
