Many happy returns
BUFFALO TWP - Can't go home again? Guess again.
Tim Shaffer of Aliquippa, the Lernerville Speedway Sprint points champion in 1993 who hadn't won a race here since then, ended that drought in a big way Tuesday night at the Sarver track.
Shaffer started fourth in the 14th World of Outlaws Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup XIV feature, then took the lead on the 11th lap and kept it, grabbing the $30,000 winner's purse - and the biggest win of his career.
"Absolutely. This is it," Shaffer said. "This means everything to me. I learned how to race on this track.
"I've been wanting to win this race so bad, but I had been trying too hard. Tonight, I kept my cool.
"Don Martin built a great place for people to come watch racing. I'll never forget him. I'll never forget this night," He added.
Shaffer competed in his 12th Silver Cup race Tuesday night. He finished as the runner-up to Ed Lynch Jr. of Apollo in 2002. He had finished among the top five in the Silver Cup two other times.
His first season at Lernerville was 1987. He joined the Outlaws circuit after winning the track's 1993 points crown.
To win the race, Shaffer had to pass Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell - the Outlaws' top two all-time victory leaders - who started Tuesday's feature from the third and second spots, respectively.
"I don't know when this will sink in - probably not until tomorrow sometime," Shaffer said. "Steve and Sammy have dominated the Outlaw races at Lernerville.
Swindell and Kinser each have 15 Outlaw feature wins at Lernerville.
Swindell, a three-time Silver Cup champion, grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Randy Hannagan around the first turn of the first lap. He wound up finishing second while Kinser claimed third.
"Tim drove a great race," Swindell said. "We broke a spring in the car at some point. I did the best I could with what we had. We had a good enough car to stay in second."
Shaffer had to hold off Swindell and Kinser on restarts on the 18th, 30th and 32nd laps. He nearly ran up the back bumper of the lapped car of Jason Solwold on the back straightaway of the 29th lap.
"Anytime you get that close, it's scary," Shaffer said. "I quickly decided to back off and not try anything stupid."
Hannagan was a surprise pole-sitter for the feature, having finished among the top 10 in just one other Outlaws feature all season. He finished fifth Tuesday.
Hannagan was on the pole for the first time all season.
"I'm not really surprised," he said of getting the pole. "We put in a new motor combination eight races ago and we've been running well since."
Hannagan has competed in only 25 Outlaws events this year.
Bob Felmlee of Franklin won his first Outlaws heat race in 10 years and continues to enjoy a solid comeback season. He returned to racing this year for the first time since breaking his neck during a violent crash in 1999.
Felmlee is second in points at Tri-City Speedway and has won features at Tri-City and Mercer Raceway this season.
"I just wanted to get back into racing," He said. "I've missed it. It's what I want to do."
Felmlee finished 21st in the feature. Lynch. was the top local finisher, claiming sixth.
Chad Kemenah of Findlay, Ohio, had the fastest lap time during time trials, crossing the finish line in 13.263 seconds. It was his seventh fastest lap award this season, most on the Outlaws circuit.
Kemenah does not run the full Outlaws schedule. He is the three-time defending All-Star series points champion and leads that series' point race again this year.
