Seizure may have caused East Brady man to crash

EAST FRANKLIN TWP, Armstrong County — A Butler native has been identified as the man who was killed Sunday night when his car crashed into fuel pumps at a shopping center in the township.

James C. “Hilesy” Hiles, 55, of East Brady may have had a seizure shortly before 8 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and it slammed into gas pumps at the Shop ‘n Save at Franklin Village Mall, authorities said.

A medical helicopter flew Hiles to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh where he was pronounced dead at 9:37 p.m. in the emergency room.

An autopsy Monday listed the cause of death as major injuries to his chest and body, and the manner of death as accidental, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

State police said Hiles was unresponsive and trapped in his Pontiac Grand Prix when rescue crews arrived. The car’s air bags deployed, but a police accident report did not indicate if he was wearing a seat belt.

Investigators said they later spoke to family members who told police that Hiles had a medical history of seizures, which could have been a factor in the accident.

Police noted that they are awaiting toxicology reports, which could take several weeks, before completing their investigation.

Hiles, who was born in Butler, was a 1978 graduate of East Brady High School and worked at Asbury Graphite in Kittanning.

Buechele Funeral Home in East Brady is handling funeral arrangements. His obituary is on Page 11.
