Notable county residents we lost in 2015

Obituaries tell their life stories

Obituaries published daily in the Butler Eagle often list the accomplishments and interests of those who died.

When taken as a whole, these nearly 2,000 obituaries reveal a wide range of Butler County residents who led interesting lives and who accomplished a great deal.

Here are a few of the people who died in 2015 and the unique contributions they made to their communities.

[naviga:h3]Daryl M. “Red” Davis[/naviga:h3]

Daryl M. “Red” Davis, 82, of Emlenton died Jan. 13.

He had been a Sunday School teacher at the Bethany Crossroads Evangelical Church in Knox and the Old Zion United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

He was a longtime member of the Men’s Prayer Breakfast at the Emlenton Truck Plaza and was coordinator of the prayer breakfast for many years. He participated in the Venango County Prison Ministry. He traveled on mission work teams for building projects in Paraguay, Budapest and Ukraine.

[naviga:h3]Mary Jessica Terrell[/naviga:h3]

Mary Jessica Terrell, 81, of Valencia died Jan. 16.

She volunteered at the Lighthouse Foundation and served as coordinator for numerous programs.

While involved with Hosanna Industries, she was on the long-range committee, organized and directed the client care program and was honored by having the Terrell Trade Center dedicated to her.

She served on the board of Hosanna, Lighthouse and the South Butler Community Meals on Wheels.

In 2001, she was one of three women named Samaritan of the Year in Butler County for her volunteer work.

She and her family hosted exchange students through Rich-Mar Rotary and Mars American Field Service from Japan, Chile, Germany and St. Lucia.

[naviga:h3]Lee D. Kummer[/naviga:h3]

Lee D. Kummer, 81, of Forward Township died Feb. 14.

He was instrumental in starting the Butler County 4-H Dairy Club and was involved with the Butler Farm Show.

He served 25 years on the Seneca Valley School Board and sang tenor in the choirs at the Crestview and Old Union Presbyterian churches.

[naviga:h3]Mary Onufer Petronchek[/naviga:h3]

Mary Onufer Petronchek, 91, of Manor Township, Armstrong County, died May 26.

She organized and was the troop leader of the first Armco Girls Scout Troup 27 in 1945 in Lyndora.

She served as a volunteer for Armco Grey Ladies at Deshon Hospital during World War II.

She volunteered for the Volunteer Income Tax Program for the IRS and AARP for 20 years, helping the elderly, low-income and handicapped people with their taxes and other problems.

[naviga:h3]Bertha Salony[/naviga:h3]

Bertha Salony, 71, of Lyndora died June 14.

She was a lifetime member of the Butler Memorial Hospital Auxiliary since 1998. She had more than 13,500 hours of volunteer service and was named the 2007 Auxilian of the year.

[naviga:h3]Donna M. Slagel[/naviga:h3]

Donna M. Slagel, 77, of Butler died June 29.

She was a member of the St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church in Butler.

She had made more than 9,000 rosaries that were distributed worldwide.

[naviga:h3]Gary A. Foster[/naviga:h3]

Gary A. Foster, 74, of Evans City died April 4.

The mayor of Evans City for more than 19 years, Foster was a member of the Amateur Softball Association, where he umpired for 45 years. He umpired the Cranberry CUP softball event since it began in 2000.

[naviga:h3]H. Allen Bupp[/naviga:h3]

H. Allen Bupp, 70, of Harmony died July 14.

In 1963, he became a member of the Northwest Pennsylvania Steam Engine and Old Equipment Association, where he was a former board director. He was involved with the development and repurposing the land that is now the Portersville Steam Show.

[naviga:h3]Dorothy ‘Dotty’ Stebler[/naviga:h3]

Dorothy M. “Dotty” (Fennell) Stebler, 90, of Cranberry Township died Aug. 26.

She designed and made the wreaths used annually at the Cranberry Township Veterans Memorial Day ceremony at North Boundary Park from 1999 to the present.

She created the nose design drawing for a refueling plane of the 171st National Guard U.S. Air Force in 2006.

[naviga:h3]Andrew Erie[/naviga:h3]

Andrew Erie of Center Township, died Oct. 4.

He was active in the Butler County American Legion Baseball Association, serving as chairman for more than 30 years.

He was as manager and president for 17 years of the Center Township Baseball Association in Butler.

[naviga:h3]Mary A. Logut Rozic[/naviga:h3]

Mary A. Logut Rozic of Stirling Village died Dec. 13.

Mary was a member of the Saint Fidelis Parish and the Catholic Daughters of America. She participated in the Catholic Daughters project of sending rosaries to missions all over the world. She made more than 70,000 rosaries.

[naviga:h3]Norman Rettig Jr.[/naviga:h3]

Norman “Dutch” Frederick Rettig Jr., 89, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Butler, died Dec. 27.

He was a World War II Navy veteran.

He a five-time commander of VFW Post 249, a life member of the American Legion Lyndora Post 778, the Military Order of Cooties, a past state VFW commander from 1993 to 1994, a past VFW 25th District commander, a past Butler County VFW council commander, an Armco Veteran Club member, the chairman-treasurer of the Butler Area Military Veterans Day Memorial Day Committee for many years, and a member of the Post 249 Honor Guard for over 45 years.

He was the Butler County’s Veteran of the Year in 1984.
