teachers
My school district is not negotiating a contract currently. I would hope that my community would support the situation as a whole to find a balance that works for both sides. Almost two years is a long time to work without a contract. I don't believe in strikes, but if they are to be eliminated by laws, provisions should also be made that a equitable agreement should be reachede within a certain time period or penalties to both sides would occur. Currently, when negotiations stall, like in SB, striking is the only leverage left to force both parties to try a little harder to meet in the middle. No one wins in these situations, except the district lawyer who is paid no matter what. If teachers strike, they do not do so lightly. They risk loss of pay for their families, loss of class time with their students, and being ostracized by the very community who supports them in the good times, but abandons them in contractual turmoil.I considered moving my family to the South Butler area, be reconsidered because of the turmoultuous relationship between the school board, teachers and community. We (the public as a whole) have money for our children to have cell phones, video games, etc., but we do not extend the same money to pay teachers for our children to have a solid education. Our district's school taxes went up this year and I will make it work, because I know how hard the teachers in our district are working for my children. My priority is an education.
