The reason they celebrate Santa Claus - who by the way really has nothing to do with Christianity - Macy's really dreamed that up - is that, think about a 6 year old child going to school on January 2. All the other kids come in with new things they got from Santa Claus, except the little Hindi kids. Even Jewish kids come in with Hanukkah presents. They are told if they are good, they get presents, so the Hindi kids think they have done something bad. They are not old enough to understand religion.

And I know the whole story of St Nick, which if Santa Claus were really St Nick, we would (and we used to when I was a child) give gifts on December 6. Besides that, people who have never stepped foot in a church and would probably melt if holy water touched them, celebrate Santa Claus. They are not Christian either. Does the Santa Claus in the mall ask the child what church he goes to before sitting the child on his lap? I don't think so..

So to keep the peace, and spare the little ones tears, they celebrate Santa Claus. When in Rome, do as the Romans do..
