Local products earn volleyball honorsButler High School graduate Matt Huey, a sophomore outside hitter on the Penn State Altoona men's volleyball team, has been named the North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year.Huey ranks fourth among all NCAA Division III men's players in kills per set (3.97) and fifth in points per set (4.69). He is tops in the conference rankings in total kills (389), points (460), and solo blocks (27).Huey's efforts helped the Lions to the best regular season in program history (17-10) and first-ever berth in the conference tournament.Penn State Altoona will open postseason play in the first round of the NEAC Tournament against SUNY Polytechnic Institute Saturday at Medaille College.Seneca Valley product Chad Albert, a senior middle blocker on the Juniata College men's volleyball team, has earned a spot on the Continental Volleyball Conference All-Conference Team.This season, Albert leads the Eagles with a .381 hitting percentage and has tallied 92 kills, 34 blocks and 12 service aces.

Butler grad Bailey athlete of yearSLIPPERY ROCK — Butler graduate and Slippery Rock University student-athlete Jasmine Bailey has been named PSAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.Bailey was PSAC champion in the 400 and 200 meters. She also anchored The Rock's 4x400 meter relay, which placed second in the conference. She was an all-region selection this season.SRU coach John Papa was selected PSAC Women's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Schwarber injured in Cubs’ collisionPHOENIX — Chicago Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber was carted off the after colliding with center fielder Dexter Fowler on a play that resulted in an inside-the-park home run for Arizona’s Jean Segura.The Cubs said Schwarber had a left ankle sprain. Initial X-rays were negative and an MRI was scheduled for Friday.

Dakota, Quinnipiac in hockey title gameTAMPA, Fla. — Nick Schmaltz scored off a rebound with less a minute left and North Dakota beat Denver 4-2 to advance to the NCAA hockey championship game for the first time in 11 years.North Dakota’s trip to the Frozen Four in its first season under coach Brad Berry is the 22nd for the Fighting Hawks. They will face No. 1 overall seed Quinnipiac on Saturday night in the title game.Quinnipiac (32-3-7) advanced with a 3-2 victory over Boston College and is looking for its first national title. North Dakota (33-6-4) has won seven NCAA crowns.
