Helen Schubert
Helen Davidson Schubert, 98, of West Sunbury, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, while on her way to give a presentation at Slippery Rock University.
Helen remained active, engaged, curious and committed to sharing her knowledge and experiences with others — a fitting testament to a life lived fully and with purpose.
She was born Helen Marie Hilliard in Isle, Pa., to Albert and Nettie (Rieger) Hilliard.
During World War II, she worked at the Armco Steel Mill, where she met her first husband, Ira Roland Davidson. They had two children, Daniel A. Davidson and Marty N. “Sis” Davidson.
Helen was a hardworking woman, and throughout her long and remarkable life she held many roles and embraced every opportunity to work, learn and contribute. She worked as a baker at the Penn State Diner, became a notary, held a real estate license and worked until the age of 76 as a secretary for her brother’s company, Hilliard Mining.
In 1965, Helen married Roy Schubert and together they blended their families, welcoming Roy’s three daughters, Margie, Sandy and Linda. Helen embraced her expanded family wholeheartedly and treasured the relationships that grew from their combined family.
Roy and Helen owned Schubert’s Hardware in West Sunbury, and raised beef cattle on their farm. Helen’s faith was an important part of her life. She was a deeply devoted member of Springdale Lutheran Church in West Sunbury, where she was recently recognized as the longest-standing member of the congregation. She remained extremely active in the church and cherished the friendships and community she found there.
Her love of learning never faded. Helen was a longtime member of the Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) at Slippery Rock University, where she took countless classes and workshops. She was a member since the ILR’s conception and remained active for 25 years.
Helen will be lovingly remembered by her daughters by marriage, Margie (William) Rieger and Sandy Mooney; her daughter-in-law, Deborah (Edward) Michael; her grandchildren, Angela (Scott) Davidson Smith, Stephanie De Cecco, Loren Hagen, Jennifer Rieger and David Mooney; her great-grandchildren, Erika (Zachary) Sumner, Alex Smith, Misty Hogan and TJ Robinson; and her great-great-grandson, Rowan Smith. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and countless friends whose lives were touched by her.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Nettie Hilliard; her husbands, Ira Roland Davidson and Roy Schubert; her children, Daniel A. Davidson and Marty “Sis” Davidson; her brother, Dan Hilliard; her sister, Marty Huff; her grandson, Ben Davidson; and her stepdaughter, Linda Schubert.
