Race turns tragic

Cranberry man collapses, dies

PITTSBURGH — A Cranberry Township man collapsed and later died Sunday while participating in the EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler race.

Michael Kovacic, 32, collapsed at 9:45 a.m. on the course near the finish line and initially received treatment from emergency crews on site. He later was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead at 10:35 a.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

A cause of death was not determined as of this morning. The medical examiner said an autopsy was expected to be done later today.

Race organizers said in a statement that the family is requesting privacy, and said organizers would not release any personal or medical information about Kovacic.

“We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of one of our participants at the Pittsburgh 10 miler. Our hearts go out to the family,” the statement said.

The race began in Station Square and took runners through neighborhoods such as the Strip District and the North Side before finishing downtown.

It was founded in 2013 and is run by Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon Inc.

On Sunday, more than 4,000 racers participated.

Eagle staff writer John Bojarski contributed to this report.
