Woman accused of bringing suspected crack into prison

Nora Barker

A Butler woman is accused of bringing drugs into the county prison.

Nora Ann Barker, 57, is facing felony and misdemeanor drugs charges in the case that followed her arrest Thursday by Butler police on a bench warrant.

Patrolman William Dobson spotted Barker getting into a car shortly after 2 a.m. at a West Jefferson Street convenience store. He knew about the warrant and stopped the vehicle at South Chestnut and Shore streets, police said.

A front-seat passenger, Barker was taken into custody. Police said they searched her purse and found a crack cocaine pipe, an empty drug stamp bag, and a Suboxone strip for which she did not have a prescription.

Officers warned Barker that if she had any other illegal substances hidden on her to tell police, according to court documents, because if she took contraband into the prison, she would be in violation of a felony offense.

While taking her to the prison, police said they noticed her “moving a lot in the back seat.” Officers later checked the back seat and allegedly found a plastic baggie corner containing suspected crack cocaine inside a sandwich bag.

At the prison, police said, a female corrections officer searched Barker and found four plastic baggie corners of suspected crack and two empty baggie corners.

District Judge Dave Kovach arraigned Barker on a felony charge of bringing a controlled substance into the prison and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

She was released on $10,000 unsecured bond. Online court records did not indicate if she has an attorney. She could not be reached for comment.
