Man dies in ATV crash

The scene of a fatal ATV accident Tuesday in Lancaster Township.

LANCASTER TWP — A township man was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident Tuesday evening.

Timothy McGonigal, 44, hit a speed limit sign and a guy wire attached to a utility pole after the ATV he was driving ran off the road at the intersection of Liberty and Camp Run roads, according to police.

The township police were investigating the incident, but they believe that speed was a factor, said officer Chris Altman.

“He came around the bend too fast and lost control,” he said.

According to an eyewitness who talked to police, McGonigal was driving the ATV south on Liberty Road near the intersection with Camp Run Road when he lost control and crashed, landing on the grass in front of a house at around 6:35 p.m.

Harmony Fire District and Cranberry Township EMS responded to the accident. Efforts were made by first responders to resuscitate the man. When they were unsuccessful, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy has been scheduled and more information will be released when the investigation is complete, according to Lancaster Township police.
