2 arrested for felony drug possession

It wasn't much of a birthday celebration for a Butler woman Wednesday.

City police arrested Cynthia A. McCallister on her 40th birthday after officers seized cocaine and drug-packaging materials, syringes, scales and other contraband at a Fairview Avenue apartment.

Also arrested was 40-year-old Gilbert R. Gans. Both defendants are charged with felony drug possession, and they are being held in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bond each.

Police said they were assisting state parole agents and county probation officers in serving a parole revocation warrant for McCallister when they found her around 10:30 a.m. at the apartment on the 200 block of Fairview Avenue.Gans was also at the apartment, along with another man and woman. The other woman, it turned out, was wanted on her own bench warrant. While conducting a protective sweep of the apartment, police said, parole and probation officials allegedly noticed suspected drug paraphernalia in a back bedroom.Police subsequently obtained a search warrant for the apartment. The warrant was executed shortly after 1:30 p.m. The apartment's lessee, a woman, showed up as the warrant was being served, authorities said.

The lessee told police that both defendants had been staying in the back bedroom, investigators said, where the suspected drugs and related items were allegedly found. In that bedroom, police said they found a knotted, plastic baggie with nearly 25 grams of suspected cocaine. Officers also found a coffee filter containing nearly 30 grams of an unknown white powder.Additionally, the search of the same bedroom allegedly turned up a box of syringes and used stamp bags, other packaging materials, five cellphones, two digital scales and a hand-written ledger filled with names and dollar amounts next to those names.McCallister and Gans were arraigned on felony charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.Preliminary hearings for the defendants were not immediately scheduled. Online court records did not list attorneys for them.
