Fire damages home in Butler

A cigarette was the apparent cause of a fire at 116 South St. on Saturday morning.

Stacy Gould, who rents the two-story home, said city firefighters responded quickly enough to limit the fire to the second-floor bathroom where it started about 8 a.m.

"I woke up and the bathroom was on fire. It looked like the whole wall was in flames," she said.

Gould said she and her two 22-year-old nieces were sleeping downstairs, but her 18-year-old son's room was next to the bathroom upstairs.

"His room was filled with smoke. I had to run up and get him," she said.

Gould said her husband had left for work earlier.

No one was injured, and fire damage was limited to the bathroom, while the home's second story was damaged by smoke.

City police, Butler Ambulance, Allegheny Power and T.W. Phillips Gas utility workers assisted firefighters.
