Wetzel

Ronald “Ron” Charles Wetzel, 68, of Saxonburg, passed away Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, comfortably at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Butler on Dec. 19, 1957, he was the son of the late Kenneth Charles Wetzel and Dorothy Mae Wetzel.

In 1980, he started his career with Kenneth E. Bauman as a bus driver. Known for having the loudest speakers (blaring WDVE, of course) he was beloved by the students he drove on “Bus 78.”

Ron decided to put his creativity and meticulous nature to use as a mechanic with Bauman (and later WL Roenigk Inc.). He was a highly skilled and respected fleet mechanic until his retirement this year. He took so much pride in his job, ensuring that all passengers and drivers were safe on the road.

Ron’s creativity was most apparent in his garage, where he loved to listen to loud music and throw back a couple “Genny” Cream Ales. His favorite hobby was anything with a motor. He was known for his wild creations and customizations of cars and motorcycles. He might have even created a motorized bar stool. He also deeply loved spending time with his family: cruising, going to dinner and joking around.

Ron’s humor was unparalleled. He was always ready with a one-liner or pithy bit of wisdom. Despite this, he was humble and didn’t like the spotlight. Beneath his jovial nature lay the biggest and most generous heart. He was appreciated and respected by all who knew him.

A devoted father, brother, son, uncle and friend, he is survived by his daughter, Casey Wetzel; sister, Connie Bortz (Steve Weaver); nephew, Bobby Bortz; great-niece, Laura Bortz; and best friend, Tammy Neel.

WETZEL — All services for Ronald “Ron” Charles Wetzel, who died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, will be held privately through SPENCER D. GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 140 New Castle Road, Butler.

Ron asked that he be remembered as he was and did not want any services held.
