NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Dr. William J. Petit today described on the witness stand at the Cheshire triple slaying trial being suddenly awakened at his home while being attacked in the middle of the night

"I remember thinking and feeling 'ow, 'ow,' ow,'" Petit testified at the trial of suspect Steven J. Hayes at Superior Court.

Petit, the lone survivor of the 2007 attack, said he saw two men standing over him with a gun and hearing one say "if he moves put two bullets in him."

Petit said he was tied at his hands and feet and brought to the basement and tied to a pole.

He said he heard his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, formerly of Slippery Rock, in the kitchen and saying that she would need her checkbook to go to the bank.

Petit's testimony Tuesday in the Cheshire home invasion and triple homicide followed dramatic testimony Monday by bank employees who saw Hawke-Petit shortly before her death, and a neighbor who found a bloodied Dr. Petit lying in the neighbor's driveway, calling for help.

Before testimony began in Superior Court Monday, New Haven Chief Public Defender Thomas Ullmann in his opening statement acknowledged Hayes sexually assaulted and strangled Hawke-Petit in her home. The couple's two daughters also died in a fire at the home, allegedly set by one or both of the defendants.
