Human remains found in Allegheny Township

ALLEGHENY TWP — State police are investigating the discovery Sunday of human remains in a wooded area off Sandy Point Road.

Trooper Ron Kesten said this morning a hunter found the wet remains on part of a 350-acre property at 307 Sandy Point Road.

Authorities were notified about 8 a.m. that day.

Police were assisted by the Mercyhurst College Outdoor Crime Scene Recovery Team led by Dennis Dirkmaat, a forensic anthropologist, and by the Eau Claire Volunteer Fire Department.

Dirkmaat said this morning the human remains will be examined later this week "to give them a little time to dry up."

He wants to have any information available given to the police this week so they can proceed with their investigation.

The fire department helped Dirkmaat's team set up camp in the woods.

"It was miserable," he said about weather conditions Sunday.
