Stolen French medal for veteran replaced

PITTSBURGH — A Pennsylvania man will be awarded a replacement French Legion of Honor medal after the original he was to receive was stolen Friday.

Honorary French consul Jean-Dominique Le Garrec says his Pittsburgh home was broken into Friday night and a safe containing two medals stolen.

One medal was to be awarded today to 89-year-old World War II Navy veteran Albert Crawford.

Crawford of Coraopolis was among 25 World War II veterans awarded the Legion of Honor in a ceremony in June but was unable to travel to the French Embassy. He served on board a supply ship during the D-Day invasion at Normandy.

The consul says a replacement medal was obtained and will be awarded today.
