Day 13 of the Turin Olympics
Wednesday, Feb. 22
STARS
Anja Paerson of Sweden finally completed her Olympic medal collection with a gold in the women's slalom. Before breaking through in the slalom, Paerson had four Olympic medals — one silver and three bronzes — but no gold.
Chandra Crawford upstaged two better-known Canadian teammates — Beckie Scott and Sara Renner — to win gold in the women's 1.1km cross-country skiing sprint. America's Kikkan Randall was ninth, the best-ever Olympic finish for an American woman in cross-country.
BROTHERS ON BOARDS
It was Schoch vs. Schoch in the final race of the snowboarding men's parallel giant slalom. And the winner was ... Philip Schoch, the defending Olympic champion from Switzerland over older brother Simon Schoch.
STREAK ENDS
In finishing fourth in the women's slalom, Croatia's Janica Kostelic ended a remarkable streak of six straight events in which she had medaled. She can take consolation in the fact her six medals over two Olympics are the most by any woman Alpine skier.
STREAK CONTINUES?
Not since 1964 has America gone home from a Winter Games without a medal in women's figure skating. Sasha Cohen, barely leading Russia's Irina Slutskaya after the short program, looks to continue that streak as the competition wraps up with Thursday's long program.
TURIN TALK
"You'd think USA Hockey would be a well-oiled machine, but it's not. Basically we were on our own for hotels, tickets, flights, stuff like that. Normally we wouldn't have to worry about stuff like that." — U.S. hockey player Mike Modano, ripping the people who assembled the disappointing American hockey team. The Americans were ousted from the Olympic tournament by Finland after winning just one of their six games; Modano spent most of the third period on the bench.
