Butler Township will be building a new parking lot to the north of the Pullman Recreation Complex in coming months using new land it intends to purchase.

Butler City Council voted unanimously at a meeting Monday evening, Aug. 31, to approve a subdivision plan for property owned by Capital Environmental Risk Transfer Alliance on Bantam Avenue. The southern of the two subdivided parcels will be sold to Butler Township.

Township manager Tom Knights presented the plan for the property to council prior to the vote. He said the project will hopefully help resolve some parking concerns near the northern fields.

“We’re seeing, on heavy days, a lot of on-street parking,” he said. “Obviously, the (Butler) Transit Authority still has to operate buses throughout most of that time period. We want to alleviate any congestion and help get parking off the road.”

He said the property the township will acquire is around 8 acres and will eventually feature 120 to 130 parking spots, as well as the northern section of a planned walking trail around the complex.

“We have a walking trail that’ll extend around the perimeter, so we’ll just grab right off (the northern) end and be able to provide pedestrian access to the field area from the acquired property,” Knights said.

The plan was also recommended for approval unanimously by the city’s planning commission during its Aug. 5 meeting.

Knights said a southern parking lot is already planned with the hope to put the project out to bid at the next Butler Township meeting on Sept. 9.

The next Butler City Council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
