Police crack down on gas drilling trucks

HARRISBURG State police say that about three out of every four trucks were cited for violations last month in an enforcement effort for gas drilling wastewater hauling vehicles.

State police said today that citations were issued for 1,066 of the more than 1,400 trucks it and another agency inspected over three days in late October.

They placed 207 trucks and 52 drivers out of service. The most common citations were for unsecured loads and lights or lamps that weren’t working.

The “Operation FracNET” checks were performed by state police and the Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP inspected for weight, load security and waste hauling paperwork. Drillers use the water under high pressure to fracture the underground shale layers to release natural gas.
