AVELLA, Pa. — The state Department of Environmental Protection says a company failed to properly manage flammable byproducts that caused a gas-well fire that injured three workers in February.

Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corp. says it is working with government agencies and will abide by the department’s March 21 order to properly store and manage condensate, a liquid byproduct.

Agency spokeswoman Katy Gresh says investigators found numerous ignition points at the well, and may never determine exactly what caused the condensate to catch fire.

Three workers injured in the Feb. 23 fire near Avella are out of the hospital. Workers were burning off excess gas when the fire occurred.
