Statzer aids Rock sweep

Seneca Valley graduate Nathan Statzer was 5-for-5 and scored three runs in the first game Tuesday as Slippery Rock University swept a baseball doubleheader at Shepherd (W.Va.) College.

The Rock (19-9) banged out 20 hits in winning the first game, 13-7. SRU claimed the nightcap, 7-3.

Derek Blyzwick pitched six innings and got the win in Game 1. He struck out six and surrendered 10 hits.

Statzer homered, had four singles and two RBI in the first game. Ben Marzullo also homered during an eight-run first inning.

Joe Pascarella added four hits and two RBI, while Knoch graduate Chase Rowe contributed three hits and two RBI.

Slippery Rock High School graduate Scott Rice pitched a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two.

Adam Ritts scattered six hits over six innings to get the victory in the nightcap. Rowe had three more hits for The Rock, and Dave Gonos homered and had four RBI.

The Rock travels to Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday before hosting the Red Raiders in a 1 p.m. twinbill Saturday at Critchfield Park.
