SRU baseball team splits with Shippensburg
The Slippery Rock University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh and held off a Shippensburg rally to salvage a doubleheader split with a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon.
The Rock dropped the first game 4-0.
In the second game, SRU (20-10, 4-2) was held hitless for the first six innings before Joe Pascarella led off the top of the seventh with a double.
Slippery Rock High School graduate Jason Curry then knocked in pinch runner Phil Butch with a double and scored on a ground ball out by Dave Gonos.
Shippenburg (27-4, 5-1) scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh, but Rocky D'Angelo got out of the jam to preserve the win.
In the first game, The Rock had the bases loaded twice, but was unable to score in the shutout loss.
Curry had two of SRU's five hits in the first game.
Karyn McCready finished second in the javelin as the Slippery Rock University track and field team competed in the Duke Invitational Saturday.Slippery Rock High School graduate Melissa Sopher finished 11th in the 400 meter hurdles and Butler grad Jill Rekich placed 13th in the same event.On the men's side, Butler grad Aaron Rekich placed third in the 110-meter hurdles.
Bobbi Kyler knocked in three runs as the Slippery Rock University softball team swept Edinboro Saturday, 12-4 and 12-11.The Rock (11-10, 3-1) got two hits and two RBI apiece from Alicia Caranese, Maureen Brown and Shannon Tagliaferri in the first game.
Matt Walsh fired a 76 and Dan Rodgers a 70 to lead the Slippery Rock University men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Mercyhurst Invitational Saturday.
