Shepherd takes down slumping SRU baseball team
Things are not looking good for The Rock.
The Slippery Rock University baseball team dropped its fourth straight and fifth out of its last sixth, suffering a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Shepherd (W.Va.) College, 7-5 and 7-1, at Critchfield Park Wednesday afternoon.
The Rock (20-14) led 4-1 in the first game heading into the top of the sixth, but Shepherd (12-13) scored five runs in the frame off Slippery Rock starter Adam Ritts, who gave up seven runs in seven innings of work.
Matt Kozusko hit a solo home run for The Rock in the opener.
Slippery Rock managed just two hits in the second game.
Billy Wolfe hit a solo shot to account for the only Rock run.
Nathan Statzer, a Seneca Valley High School graduate, had the only other SRU hit in the second game. He had three hits in the first game and went 4-for-6 in the two games.
The Rock will host California (Pa.) University in a PSAC West doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
Shannon Tagliaferri hit a home run in the first game, but the Slippery Rock University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Mercyhurst College, 12-8 and 5-4, Wednesday.
The Rock's top four players recorded wins in their singles and doubles matches Tuesday to lead SRU to a 6-3 win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania.Jessica Bungo and Ashley Michaux scored an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles for The Rock (9-6). Kelly Anderson and Seneca Valley graduate Ashley Greene followed with an 8-6 win.Bungo, Michaux and Anderson all won singles matches. The Rock men and women will host West Chester in a noon match Friday.
Shannon Holt scored six goals and Kim Adams added four goals and three steas in a 12-8 SRU win at Mercyhurst.Rock goalie Kelly Leibolt had seven saves and three steals. Butler graduate Mollie Nadler and A-C Valley graduate Amanda Zychowski had the other goals for SRU (9-13).The Rock opens the Western Division Championships April 17 at the University of Michigan.
