Bungo, Michaux win PSAC doubles title
Slippery Rock University's nationally-ranked tennis doubles team of Jessica Bungo and Ashley Michaux defeated three sets of opponents over the weekend to capture the PSAC doubles championship hosted by Bloomsburg University.
In singles competition, Bungo, the top seed, lost to Yvonne Niederbracht of Indiana (Pa.) 6-4, 6-2.
Bungo and Michaux, the top seed in doubles, beat Niederbracht and her partner, Jackie Kulp (the No. 2 seed) in doubles, 8-4.
Bungo and Michaux, ranked No. 9 in the country with a 28-2 record this spring, defeated Clarion's Melanie Frank and Ashley Rhodes 8-2 and Millersville's Kate Opilo and Morgan Burdette.
In singles, Bungo (30-4, No. 20 nationally) defeated Bloomsburg's Emily Murphy 6-4, 6-3 and Kulp 6-2, 6-0 before receiving a semifinal default win from Michaux.
Michaux defeated California's Olga Gonzalez 6-3, 6-1 and Kutztown's Priya Pachkawde 6-0, 6-3 before offering not to challenge her doubles partner.
The Rock duo will lead The Rock to its fifth successive NCAA postseason tournament appearance next weekend. SRU will face Kutztown at Millersville in one semifinal match.
In men's action, Ryan Steeh and Rich Moore each recorded a win in singles competition, but were not able to garner a top finish.
