ALLEGHENY TWP — No one was hurt when a chemical fire broke out late this morning in an industrial complex off Route 38.

Barry Louise, assistant chief at the Emlenton Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire started around 10:45 a.m.

Workers at Envirochemical were doing maintenance work on a filtering silo when it caught fire. A few tires near the silo also caught fire.

The silo contained a “plastic filtering agent” that the company uses. The Allegheny Township plant treats sludge and turns it into a fuel used by some power plants.

When the firefighters who first came to the scene found out that chemicals were involved, they called for additional crews as a precaution.

After speaking to a company representative, firefighters determined there were no volatile chemicals in the silo.

Crews were able to put the tires out in 10 minutes and the silo fire was out within 30 minutes.
