Company says gas odor was no problem

CRANBERRY TWP — A possible natural gas leak in southwestern Butler County turned out to be harmless, said a Dominion-Peoples Gas spokesman.

Barry Kukovich said the company received several calls beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday and continuing this morning from Zelienople, Harmony and Evans City reporting a natural gas odor.

Kukovich said too much odorant got into a pump station in Cranberry Township, causing the smell.

Since natural gas is odorless, gas companies add an odorant so leaks can be detected.

“That’s not too uncommon of an occurrence,” Kukovich said.

Peoples responded to the incident as if it was a gas leak, but Kukovich said there was no danger.

The company is investigating the cause of the overload. Kukovich said a lightning strike may have been responsible.
