ERIE — Randy McElwain, a Butler native and a former Connoquenessing Township resident, completed his daylong swim across Lake Erie late Wednesday night in record time.

McElwain, 47, who was making the 32-mile swim to raise funding and awareness for the skin disease alopecia areata, left the dock in Long Point, Ontario, at 7:19 a.m. and arrived on shore at Dobbins Landing in Erie at 11:43 p.m.

“I have the ultimate un-hangover right now,” McElwain said this morning. “Everything on my body hurts except for my head.

“It even hurts to move my fingers. But it was all worth it. We accomplished our goal.”

McElwain’s 14-year-old daughter, Cassie, has the autoimmune disease that is not life threatening, but does cause hair to fall out.

McElwain’s official record time was 16 hours, 26.06 minutes. Only three other people have ever used the 32-mile route to swim across the lake and the previous record was just under 19 hours.
