Fumo, Philly Democrat, leaving U.S. prison

PHILADELPHIA — A once-towering state senator from Philadelphia is set to leave federal prison after serving four years for fraud.

Vincent Fumo, a Philadelphia Democrat, today heads to a city halfway house for the next six months.

Fumo, 70, has been incarcerated in Ashland, Ky., since 2009, when a jury convicted him of stealing $4.2 million from the state, a museum and a Philadelphia neighborhood group.

The lawyer and banking heir had been in Pennsylvania politics for 30 years.
