The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team opened the season by winning the Grove City Sprint Invitational Friday.

The Wolverines earned 628 points, defeating NCAA Division II squads Gannon (485) and Edinboro (222).

Freshman Caleb Courage set a new school record in the 100 freestyle (46.74 seconds) and also won the 100 backstroke (56.23).

Courage, Joel Boerckel, Andrew Gilbert and Matt Ziders combined to win the 200-medley relay (1:40.46). Gilberrt also won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.38).

The Wolverine women's squad placed second out of three teams at the Sprint Invitational with 447 points, trailing Gannon (550.5) and finishing ahead of Edinboro (337.5).

Ellen Magee earned Grove City's lone win by taking the 200 individual medley (2:18.4). She also was second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 free.

Slippery Rock High graduate Amanda Brozenic, Magee, Jaclyn Bellissimo and Christie Hebda were second in the 200 free relay.

Grove City College will host its Distance Invitational Saturday.

Grove City College advanced to the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament semifinals with a 30-24, 24-30, 26-30, 30-27, 15-12 victory over fifth-seeded Bethany (W.Va.) Friday.The No. 4 seed Wolverines face top-seeded Waynesburg in Saturday's 10 a.m. semifinals.Kelly Tinney had 20 kills, Kim Walsh had 53 assists, Kate DiMarco had 15 digs and Carlie Roberts had six blocks for Grove City (14-15).
