Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday is suing Snapchat after claiming it failed to warn users and protect children from social media addiction and compulsive use, his office said Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Sunday “seeks honesty” from the platform in how it appears on app stores and demands it takes steps to protect child users from becoming addicted to the app. The complaint, filed in Philadelphia County Court, alleges Snapchat lies about how often adult material appears on that platform.

“Snapchat has designed its platform to lure children into constant, compulsive use that is detrimental to healthy adolescent development,” Sunday said. “This lawsuit demands that Snapchat finally admit publicly that its platform is highly addictive and that it takes real action to keep kids safe.”

The lawsuit cites designs unique to Snapchat that allegedly make it addictive. About half of teens aged 13 to 17 report using the app daily, according to the Pew Research Center.

Sunday previously announced a lawsuit Aug. 11 against TikTok for alleged negative effects on youth mental health.
