Silvester

Richard “Dick” Silvester, 85, of Gibsonia, passed away suddenly Monday, Aug. 24, 2026.

Born April 18, 1941, in Mars, he was the son of Salvatore and Lena DeSalle Silvester.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane Stirling Silvester; son, David R. Silvester (Lori); daughter, Amy E. McKaveney (Edward); and daughter, Jennifer L. Hall (Christopher). Also surviving are grandchildren, Kate (Brevin) Bergman, Harrison Silvester, Reid Hall and Maria McKaveney; sister, Sylvia McKeever; sister-in-law, June Stirling; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dick graduated from Mars High School in 1960, where he was an accomplished athlete in football, basketball and baseball — which he continued to play throughout his life, including many of his later years pitching in senior softball. He served his country from 1960 to 1963 as a U.S. Army photographer, capturing images during a peacetime deployment in Germany. On his return stateside, his love of photography led him to Hollywood for formal training in broadcasting, which served as the foundation for his long career in television as a director, including 32 years at WPXI in Pittsburgh.

Dick and Jane enjoyed retirement together, traveling and spending time with their grandchildren, with whom Dick shared his love of sports, fishing and gardening. His latest pursuit was pickleball, which he and Jane still played three times a week.

SILVESTER — Family and friends of Richard “Dick” Silvester, who died Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at MCDONALD-AEBERLI FUNERAL HOME, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at St. Mark the Evangelist Parish, St. Kilian Church, 7076 Franklin Road, Cranberry Township. Everyone is asked to please meet at the church. Burial will follow at Mars Cemetery.
